This next one started with my wife telling me that I need to push myself outside my comfort zone of painting sci-fi. I started by taking two days and thinking about the composition and learning how to draw a horses. The paint time was somewhere between 8-10 hours in Corel Painter and Photoshop. I switched between the programs pretty heavily and am starting to realize how well they work together and you create common shortcuts.

Here's a traditional Gouache attempt at our English Bully , Maiya. She came out a bit squashed and stylized because I only had her for reference for a few minutes till she decided to walk away and proceed licking the floor :)

I have been on a painting kick lately, trying to get to a point where I can get something descent down with in a few hours instead of days. Looks like a good time to start posting some of my stuff.

Dantes Inferno: This one is for the February GnomanWorkshop contest. Mostly Photoshop with a little Painter. Roughly 16 hours totaly.

Just a little update.. I am officially out of school. AM finished up over a week ago but the pressure is still ON. I'm in no position to finish my short movie in time for Siggraph but I'll be damned if I don't have new material for the job fair. With that said I'm on a mission to finish at least one shot from my short film plus a "Sad" emotional shot I'm ready to roll with. All this has to be done this month, plus the renderings , resumes , cover sheets, and all the other goodness that comes with this territory. I'm currently at my other job, but I'll post up a still of the new shots and what I have done so far.

Here are some simple, yet colorful tests for an upcoming project. Designing these was a blast because it required a completely different approach then my regular concept paintings. I usually enjoy working on a single layer, keeping true to a traditional style. With these two , I kept a lot of layers live and used a cutout style in order to experiment with moods and settings.

It's been a great learning experience but it's time to flip this thing into a career. Over my course at Animation Mentor I have made lifelong friends and picked up on a lot of goodies. The last 18 months solidified my career path and I am proud to say that I have no regrets about my choice in education or direction. There is still tons to learn and I'm eager to sink my teeth into whatever the future holds.
